The Best NFL Flag Running Plays

In NFL FLAG the quarterback cannot run past the line, so the run game means getting the ball to a receiver on the move. The jet sweep is the backbone: fast motion, a quick handoff, and a race to the edge. Pair it with screens and you have a real ground attack.

Coaching tip: Time the motion so the runner is at full speed as he crosses the quarterback. A jet sweep lives or dies on timing, so rep the exchange until it is smooth.

Jet Sweep

Trips Right
The base run

Fast motion and a clean handoff hit the edge before the defense can set it.

Coaching point: Z comes in fast motion, takes the handoff, and beats the edge. The 5v5 run game lives here since the QB cannot run. Sell the fake pass.

Common questions

Can the quarterback run in NFL FLAG?

No. Under NFL FLAG rules the quarterback cannot run past the line of scrimmage. The run game is a handoff or jet sweep to a receiver, so the QB passes or hands off on every snap.

What is the best running play in 5v5 flag football?

The jet sweep. Fast motion plus a quick handoff gets your fastest player to the edge with a head start, and a fake pass holds the defense.

How do you run the ball if the QB cannot run?

Use sweeps and screens. Motion a receiver for a jet sweep handoff, or call a bubble or tunnel screen that plays like a designed run behind blockers.
