Several more states run pilot programs, club seasons, or statewide tournaments while they work toward sanctioning, and those are listed here too with a badge showing exactly where each state stands.
What does state-sanctioned mean for girls flag football?
Sanctioned means the state high school athletic association recognizes girls flag football as an official varsity sport. In practice that means a regulated season, eligibility rules, officials, and a state championship, and it usually means the sport counts toward a varsity letter. A club or pilot program can be just as competitive, but it sits outside that structure.
Does my daughter need to play club flag football to make her high school team?
No. Most high school programs hold open tryouts and many players arrive having never played organized flag football. Club and rec experience helps in the deepest states, where varsity rosters are competitive, but a first-year player is still a normal thing on a high school roster.
Can girls flag football lead to a college scholarship?
Yes, and quickly. Flag football is an NAIA and NJCAA championship sport and an NCAA emerging sport, with new college programs added every season, many of them offering athletic aid. Start with the athletic director, then the state association. Most states that sanctioned the sport did it after a pilot filled up faster than expected, and most pilots were seeded by a nearby NFL club or a local league.
