5v5 flag football rules, compared across every major rulebook
5v5 flag football puts five players a side on a field about 25 yards wide. In NFL FLAG, USA Football and IFAF rules the quarterback cannot run the ball directly, the passer has 7 seconds, and passes are required in the no-run zones. Rushers start 7 yards back, more than 7 in IFAF.

Who plays 5v5 flag football?
5v5 is the format of NFL FLAG youth leagues, the most common i9 Sports format, the USA Football and IFAF international game, and the Olympic event planned for LA28.
NFL FLAG says its teams compete 5 on 5 and allow up to 10 players on a team. i9 Sports calls 5v5 its most common format. USA Football publishes the USA Flag 5s rulebook, which it describes as a condensed version of the IFAF rulebook. RISE plays 5v5 in its 7th and 8th grade division and calls it the Olympic format.
For the Olympics, USA Football says its international events follow the IFAF 5-on-5 rules that will be used at LA28. LA28 describes two 20-minute halves on a 70-yard field, with a 6-team men's tournament and a 6-team women's tournament.

The rulebooks agree on more than they differ. Where they split, it is on the field, the no-run zone at midfield, how many defenders may rush, and how long the halves run. The NFL FLAG rules page walks through that rulebook section by section.
How big is a 5v5 flag football field?
About 25 yards wide and 64 to 70 yards long, end zones included, in the NFL FLAG, USA Football and IFAF rulebooks. The first down is at midfield.
NFL FLAG gives two options: 25 x 70 yards with 10-yard end zones, or 25 x 64 with 7-yard end zones. USA Football lists 25 x 70 yards in total, with two 10-yard end zones and a 50-yard field of play, and notes that some sites use smaller fields. IFAF sets a 50-yard field of play, two 10-yard end zones and a 25-yard width.
Two rulebooks give a different summary on their websites. The nflflag.com rules page and the i9 Sports basic rules page both describe a field 30 yards wide and 70 yards long. If your league marks its own field, ask which numbers it uses. The flag football field dimensions guide covers layout for operators, and field size by rulebook lists every rulebook's numbers.
Can the quarterback run in 5v5 flag football?
Not directly. In NFL FLAG the quarterback cannot run the ball across the line at all, and in USA Football and IFAF rules only after the ball has gone to a teammate and come back.
The running game in 5v5 comes from handoffs, pitches and laterals behind the line. NFL FLAG allows direct handoffs, pitches and laterals behind the line only, and bans the center sneak, where the quarterback gives the ball first to the center. USA Football also bans the center sneak and allows multiple handoffs. Any player who takes a handoff may throw a forward pass from behind the line in NFL FLAG and USA Football rules.
A handoff changes the defense too. In NFL FLAG and USA Football, once the ball is handed off every defender may cross the line. In IFAF rules, defenders inside 7 yards wait for a handoff, a fake handoff or a pass.
- NFL FLAG: the quarterback cannot run across the line of scrimmage (X. Running Game, rule 2).
- USA Football: the quarterback cannot run directly across the line without first handing off and getting a second handoff back, or catching a pass.
- IFAF: the quarterback cannot run past the line unless another player had the ball and returned it, or a defender touched it in flight (R7-1-3e).
- RISE 7th and 8th grade: the quarterback may run only when the defense rushes.
Where are the no-run zones in 5v5?
Every 5v5 rulebook we checked has one 5 yards before the end zone. NFL FLAG and i9 Sports add a second one 5 yards before midfield.
Inside a no-run zone the play must be a pass. NFL FLAG says every play there must be a forward pass that crosses the line. USA Football says teams cannot run the ball in any fashion there, even with a handoff. IFAF says that when the ball is snapped on or inside the 5-yard line going in, the offense must run a forward pass play.
Both NFL FLAG and USA Football relax the rule for beginners. NFL FLAG removes the no-run zones in league play for 8U and younger, and keeps them in 8U tournament play. USA Football recommends removing the no-run zone for players still learning to pass and catch.
How does the rush work in 5v5?
Up to 2 rushers start at least 7 yards from the line of scrimmage in NFL FLAG and USA Football, and each must raise a hand before the snap to show they are rushing.
NFL FLAG requires the rushers to go at once: a delayed rush is not permitted. USA Football calls them blitzers and lets defenders who are not blitzing defend at the line. IFAF lets any defender lined up more than 7 yards off at the snap rush; up to 2 may raise a hand as blitzers to get right of way, but the hand is not required.
Rush rules change for young players. NFL FLAG does not allow a rush in regular-season league play for 8U, 7U, 6U and 1st to 3rd grade, unless there is a legal handoff. USA Football recommends dropping pass blitzers for teams still learning, so the passer gets the full 7 seconds. The RISE 7th and 8th grade game allows 1 declared rush per possession, from 3 yards. Rush lines in every format are compared in flag football rushing rules.

How long does the quarterback have to throw in 5v5?
Seven seconds in NFL FLAG, USA Football and IFAF rules. A handoff or pitch ends the count in NFL FLAG and USA Football.
If the clock runs out, the play is dead at the line of scrimmage and the down is lost. NFL FLAG adds that only 1 forward pass is allowed per play, it must cross the line, and there is no intentional grounding. RISE uses a spoken count instead: 4 seconds from 3rd grade up and 5 seconds for kindergarten to 2nd grade.
Is there blocking in 5v5 flag football?
No. NFL FLAG and USA Football both say no blocking or screening is allowed at any time, and IFAF says blocking, tackling and kicking are not allowed.
In NFL FLAG the offense also cannot impede a rusher's path, which is set before the snap from the rusher to the quarterback. Ball carriers cannot flag guard: no stiff arm, no lowered elbow or head, and no covering the flags with the ball or a jersey.
Every play in the Flag50 playbook is built without blocking: the center always runs a route, and no player blocks.
How is 5v5 scored and timed?
A touchdown is 6 points in NFL FLAG and IFAF, and the try after it is worth 1 point from the 5 or 2 points from the 10 in NFL FLAG.
Game length differs most. NFL FLAG plays two 24-minute halves on a continuous clock in league play and two 12-minute halves in tournaments. USA Football plays two 20-minute halves in league play and recommends a running clock for ages 5 to 12. IFAF plays two 20-minute halves with a 2-minute intermission. Every rulebook's clock is compared in flag football game length by rulebook. For extra points, safeties and tiebreakers, read the flag football scoring rules guide.
What do these rules mean for your playbook?
A 5v5 offense wins with quick passes and handoffs, because the quarterback cannot run and the rush comes from 7 yards.
- Plan a pass for every no-run zone. Inside 5 yards of the end zone, and before midfield under NFL FLAG rules, a run is not an option.
- Use the center. In NFL FLAG every player is eligible, the center included, so the center is a fifth receiver.
- Count to 7. Teach the quarterback to throw or hand off well inside the pass clock, because a rusher arrives fast from 7 yards.
- Hand off with purpose. A handoff frees every defender to rush, so the ball carrier needs space to the outside or a throw ready.
Every play in the 5v5 playbook is drawn for NFL FLAG rules, so the quarterback never runs and every player runs a route. Coaches new to the format can start with the flag football rules for coaches, which covers the rules that change your play calls.

Frequently asked questions
How many players are on a 5v5 flag football team?
Five play at a time. NFL FLAG allows up to 10 players on a team, and USA Football requires at least 5 and recommends no more than 15. Your league sets its own roster limit, so check it before you build a rotation.
Is Olympic flag football played 5 on 5?
Yes. USA Football says the IFAF 5-on-5 rules will be used in the Olympics. Under those rules the quarterback cannot run past the line unless the ball came back, and the field is 50 yards plus two 10-yard end zones.
Can the center catch a pass in 5v5 flag football?
In NFL FLAG every player is eligible to catch a pass. The center snaps between the legs to a player in the backfield, and in the Flag50 playbook the center always runs a route. What the center cannot do in NFL FLAG or USA Football is take the first handoff from the quarterback.
Do 5v5 rules change for 6U and 8U teams?
In NFL FLAG league play, yes. The no-run zones go away, defenders may not rush without a handoff, and a coach may be on the field before the snap. 6U and 7U also get a do-over on a dropped snap.
