Cover 0 Man: 6v6 flag football defense

Cover 0 Man is a 6v6 flag football man-to-man defense. Five defenders each cover one receiver with no safety behind them, and one rusher pressures the quarterback. It takes away quick, easy throws and speeds up the quarterback, but any missed assignment can go the distance.

How to run it

  1. LC lines up 3 yards off X and covers X.
  2. RC lines up 3 yards off Z and covers Z.
  3. N lines up 3 yards off the left slot and covers H.
  4. W lines up 3 yards off the right slot and covers Y.
  5. M lines up 5 yards deep over the center and covers the center once it releases.
  6. R lines up 10 yards off the ball and rushes the QB.
  7. Run fit: R attacks first; each man defender plays their receiver until the ball is handed off, then rallies.
  8. For younger divisions, shorten the deep depths by 3 to 5 yards.

The coverage read

Every cover defender watches their own receiver's hips, not the quarterback. Stay on the inside shoulder and make the receiver go outside. M stays home until the center releases.

  1. LC MAN ON X
  2. N MAN ON H
  3. M CENTER

When to call it

  • On short-yardage downs.
  • Against a quarterback who holds the ball, so the rusher gets there.

Common questions

How do you line up Cover 0 Man in 6v6 flag football?

Each corner and slot defender lines up 3 yards off their receiver, the middle defender sits 5 yards over the center, and the rusher starts 10 yards off the ball.

What beats Cover 0 Man in 6v6 flag football?

Crossing routes and rubs that make defenders run into each other, and a double move on a defender who bites. Talk before the snap so everyone knows their receiver.

Why play Cover 0 Man in 6v6 flag football with no deep safety?

Because every receiver has a defender on them and the rusher shortens the clock, there is no easy throw. It is a gamble that works best when the offense needs only a few yards.
