How to run it
- LS lines up 10 yards deep over the left slot and drops to the deep left half, about 15 yards.
- RS lines up 10 yards deep over the right slot and drops to the deep right half, about 15 yards.
- LC lines up 5 yards off X and squats in the left flat at 4 to 5 yards.
- RC lines up 5 yards off Z and squats in the right flat at 4 to 5 yards.
- LR lines up 10 yards off the ball, left of center, and rushes the QB from the left.
- RR lines up 10 yards off the ball, right of center, and rushes the QB from the right.
- Center: nobody. The center is the hot read, which is the risk of this call.
- Run fit: The rushers chase, the corners squeeze from the flats, the safeties stay home.
- For younger divisions, shorten the deep depths by 3 to 5 yards.
The coverage read
The corners jump anything thrown to the flat. The safeties split the deep halves and drive on throws into the middle. The rushers take separate lanes to the quarterback.
- LR RUSH
- LC FLAT
- RS DEEP HALF
When to call it
- A high-risk call: the short middle is open, and the center can release right into it.
- Use it against a team that throws quick outs and bubbles and rarely targets the center, or as a surprise on a long down.
