Flag football headgear: Virginia Tech ratings and buyer's guide

The Virginia Tech Helmet Lab rates soft-shell flag football headgear from 1 to 5 stars, based on how much each model reduced head acceleration in lab impacts. Our table lists 58 rated models, 26 at 5 stars. Georgia's GHSA requires a 5-star model for high school players. No headgear prevents concussions.

What does a Virginia Tech 5-star rating mean?

A 5-star rating means the model cut concussion risk the most in the lab's tests. The Virginia Tech Helmet Lab hits each model 36 times, at the front, side and back of the head and at low, medium and high energy. It turns the measured linear and rotational acceleration into a risk score from 0 to 1, where 1 is the same as wearing nothing. Fixed cutoffs on that score set the star band.

Stars compare flag football headgear to each other, not to football helmets or other sports. They do not mean a player cannot get a concussion, and a rating says nothing about fit. A model that slips or sits high on the head will not perform the way it did in the lab. The lab's published test protocol explains the method in full.

Which states require a minimum headgear rating?

The Georgia High School Association requires Virginia Tech 5-star rated soft-shell headgear or protective headband starting with the fall 2026 season (GHSA rule). We found no rating threshold in any other state association as of November 5, 2026. Many youth leagues set their own rule, so ask yours.

"Meets GHSA rating" means the model holds a Virginia Tech 5-star rating. GHSA also requires coverage of the forehead, temples and back of the head, and sets insurance and availability conditions on the maker, but publishes no approved list. Confirm with the GHSA headgear page. Where Virginia Tech rated several versions of one product, check that the version you buy is the rated one. Prices are approximate, taken from each maker's site on the date shown, and change often.

How do you choose flag football headgear?

  1. Check your rule first: your state association for high school, your league for youth play.
  2. Pick from the 4 and 5-star models in the table. Virginia Tech recommends a 4 or 5-star model for flag football.
  3. Measure head circumference above the eyebrows and order to the maker's size chart.
  4. Try it on with the player's hair the way they wear it on game day. It should sit level and not shift when they shake their head.
  5. Replace it when the padding is torn, compressed, or the strap no longer holds it in place.

Frequently asked questions

Q01Is a 4-star flag football headgear model good enough?+

For most youth leagues, yes. Virginia Tech recommends any 4 or 5-star model for flag football. A 4-star model will not meet a rule that requires 5 stars, like the GHSA rule for Georgia high school players, so check your rule before you buy.

Q02Does flag football headgear prevent concussions?+

No. No headgear prevents concussions. Higher rated models reduced head acceleration more in lab tests, which may lower risk. A player with any concussion sign still comes out of the game and returns only with written clearance from a health care provider.

Q03Why does the headgear table list no price for some models?+

We list a price only when the maker shows one on its own product page, and we record the date we checked. When a price is missing, the maker did not show one or we could not confirm it. Prices change often, so check before you buy.

Q04Do brands pay to be in the Flag50 headgear table?+

No. Every model in the table comes from the Virginia Tech ratings, sorted by stars. Flag50 does not accept payment for ratings or placement. A partner may buy the labeled Featured Headgear spot above the table, and some buy links may be affiliate links.
