Cover 3 Robber: 6v6 flag football defense

Cover 3 Robber is a 6v6 flag football zone defense with no rusher. The corners and safety take the deep thirds, two defenders cover the curls, and a robber sits in the middle to take away throws over the middle. Because the QB can't run from the snap in FNL, dropping all six costs very little.

How to run it

  1. LC lines up 7 yards off X and bails to the deep left third, about 15 yards.
  2. RC lines up 7 yards off Z and bails to the deep right third, about 15 yards.
  3. S lines up 12 yards deep in the middle and drops to the deep middle third, about 18 yards.
  4. W lines up 5 yards deep over the left slot and drops to the left curl and flat at 6 to 7 yards.
  5. M lines up 5 yards deep over the right slot and drops to the right curl and flat at 6 to 7 yards.
  6. N lines up 7 yards deep in the middle and plays the robber: sinks to 10 yards in the middle, reads the QB, and protects the 8 to 12 yard middle.
  7. Center: W or M, whichever side the center releases to.
  8. Run fit: W and M attack the ball carrier, the corners keep outside contain, S stays home for a reverse.
  9. For younger divisions, shorten the deep depths by 3 to 5 yards.

The coverage read

The robber reads the quarterback's eyes and protects the 8 to 12 yard middle first. Let a shallow crosser go to W or M, so it can't pull the robber forward and open the dig behind. The deep three stay deeper than the deepest receiver. W and M widen with any flat route.

  1. N ROBBER
  2. S MIDDLE THIRD
  3. W CURL

When to call it

  • Against an offense that lives on crossers and digs.
  • When you want to bait a throw into the middle.

Common questions

How do you line up Cover 3 Robber in 6v6 flag football?

Corners 7 yards off the outside receivers, the safety 12 yards deep, two underneath defenders at 5 yards over the slots, and the robber 7 yards deep in the middle.

What does the robber do in Cover 3 Robber in 6v6 flag football?

The robber drops into the middle at about 10 yards, watches the quarterback, and breaks on digs and intermediate crossers. Shallow crossers belong to W and M, so the robber stays deep enough to take the dig. It is the best interception chance in the defense.

Why play Cover 3 Robber in 6v6 flag football without a rusher?

The quarterback can't run from the snap, so the extra defender is worth more in coverage. The 7-second clock still forces the throw.
