Cover 3: 5v5 flag football defense

Cover 3 is a 5v5 flag football zone defense with no rusher. Three defenders split the deep field into thirds and two more cover the short middle on each side. Nobody rushes, so every throw goes into a crowd, and it is one of the best ways to stop a first down.

  5. M lines up 5 yards deep, right of center, and covers the short right middle, 5 to 10 yards.
  6. Center: W or M, by side.
  7. Run fit: W and M attack, the corners keep contain, S stays home.
  8. For younger divisions, shorten the deep depths by 2 to 3 yards.

The coverage read

The deep three keep every receiver in front of them and follow anyone who runs past. W and M sit at 5 to 10 yards and take slants, ins and outs in their half.

  1. S MIDDLE THIRD
  2. W SHORT LEFT
  3. M SHORT RIGHT

When to call it

  • On third down or in the no-run zones, when the offense needs a first down.
  • Against a quarterback who makes quick reads.
  • It's also the go-to zone for 8U and younger league play, where no one may rush.

Common questions

How do you line up Cover 3 in 5v5 flag football?

The corners start 6 yards off the outside receivers and the safety 10 yards deep in the middle. W and M line up 5 yards deep on either side of the center, and nobody rushes.

What beats Cover 3 in 5v5 flag football?

A patient quarterback who uses all 7 seconds, and throws to the flats outside W and M. Pull the flag right after the catch so short gains stay short.

Why does Cover 3 have no rusher in 5v5 flag football?

In NFL FLAG the quarterback can't run across the line, so a fifth defender in coverage costs almost nothing. The 7-second pass clock still makes the quarterback throw.
