Cover 0 Man: 5v5 flag football defense

Cover 0 Man is a 5v5 flag football man-to-man defense. Four defenders each cover one receiver, including the center, and one declared rusher comes from 7 yards. Every receiver has a defender on them, so the quarterback has to make a tight throw before the rush arrives.

How to run it

  1. LC lines up 3 yards off the widest receiver on the left and covers that receiver.
  2. RC lines up 3 yards off the widest receiver on the right and covers that receiver.
  3. N lines up 3 yards off the slot receiver and covers the slot receiver.
  4. M lines up 4 yards deep over the center and covers the center once it releases.
  5. R lines up 7 yards off the ball with a hand raised, at a slight angle, and rushes the QB on the snap.
  6. Center: M.
  7. Run fit: R attacks first; each man defender plays their receiver until the handoff, then rallies.
  8. For younger divisions, shorten the deep depths by 2 to 3 yards.

The coverage read

Watch your receiver's hips, not the quarterback. Stay on the inside shoulder and make the receiver go to the sideline. M waits for the center to release, then sticks to it. Assignments follow rules, not letters: corners take the widest receiver on their side, N the next one in, M the center. R starts at a slight angle to get around the center.

  1. N MAN ON Y
  2. M CENTER
  3. R RUSH

When to call it

  • As your base defense once your division allows a rusher.
  • Against an offense that wants quick, easy throws.

Common questions

How do you line up Cover 0 Man in 5v5 flag football?

Both corners and N start 3 yards off their receivers, M sits 4 yards over the center, and R raises a hand at the 7-yard rush line.

What beats Cover 0 Man in 5v5 flag football?

Crossing routes that make two defenders run into each other, and a center who slips out late after M looks away. Call out switches before the snap.

Why is Cover 0 Man popular in 5v5 flag football?

With only four receivers, one rusher still leaves a defender for every receiver, and it is the simplest defense for young players to learn: find your player and stay with them.
