The two paths
This is the first decision that constrains every other one. It determines your rules, your jerseys, your sponsor categories, your tournament pathway, and who owns the brand you are building.
| Independent league | Affiliate league | |
|---|---|---|
| Brand, rules, pricing, uniforms, sponsors | Yours | The brand's rules and standards apply |
| Revenue | Keeps 100 percent | Pays a per-player kit purchase, a deposit, or a fee |
| What you source yourself | Everything: rulebook, insurance, registration software, jerseys and flags, marketing, a tournament pathway | Whatever the brand does not supply |
| What the brand supplies | Nothing | Some combination of jerseys, software, insurance access, templates, marketing assets, and a path to regional and national championships |
The right answer depends on your market, your capital, your ambitions for the brand, and how much you value a turnkey launch versus long-term control. The programs themselves, with their published terms, are in league programs compared.
How to decide: five questions
Work through these five questions.
- Who already operates in your territory? Most affiliates review existing leagues before approving a new one. If your market is already served, differentiation (girls-only, 7v7, adult, a Friday-night product, a different age band) becomes the strategy, and a different affiliate or an independent brand may be the better fit.
- How much do you value a national brand? A recognized name and jersey (NFL club jerseys, Under Armour, Nike) helps convert strangers at registration. If your market is cold and your brand is new, that matters. If you have a built-in audience (a school, a gym, a church, a parks department), it matters less.
- What is your sponsorship plan? Some affiliates reserve sponsor categories (NFL FLAG reserves automotive, for example). If you intend to sell naming rights or a title sponsor, check every affiliate's co-branding rules first.
- Do you intend to sell this business someday? An affiliate league can be an attractive acquisition for a consolidator, but the brand is not yours. An independent brand with a registered trademark can be sold outright.
- How much operating infrastructure do you already have? Affiliates compress the launch: templates, software, jerseys, a manual, a success manager. If you are starting from zero with no staff, that compression is worth real money in year one.

An independent league pays $0 to enter. Plan on roughly $30 to $60 per player all-in for jersey, belt, insurance and software Estimate, with your own rulebook and open events as your tournament path.
USA Football is the national governing body, not a league brand, and gives an independent league rules, training and credibility. In 2025, affiliation was free to enroll, with a $40 coach or commissioner membership and a $35 athlete membership. When all members were compliant, the package included $1M/$3M general liability, $100,000 accident medical, $1M abuse coverage, D&O and $25,000 equipment coverage through Players Health. It also provides flag rules, coach and officials certification, age verification and Team USA scouting access. For 2026, USA Football moved to Enrollment Plus+ (coach courses at $19.50, roster cards at $14.50 per athlete), which does not include insurance; groups get a separate quote through Players Health Sourced.
