What site care includes

Hosting plus ongoing SEO, AEO and GEO, so families find your league on Google and in AI answer tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. Site care is $149/month, included with Flag50 registration.

  • Hosting. Your league website stays fast and secure.

The new league owner checklist

This is everything a new league owner needs in place before the first game. Items marked League Launch are the ones we set up for you. The rest are yours, and most take a phone call or a form.

For the step-by-step season plan, see how to start a flag football league. For the registration form itself, see the registration checklist.

1. Business and money

Set these up once. They carry over every season.

  • Pick a league name, then confirm the domain and social handles are free.
  • Decide how the league is organized: your own business or nonprofit, or under an existing group like a rec department, church or school. Ask an accountant or attorney which fits your state.
  • Get an EIN for the league. The IRS issues one free, and you never have to pay a fee for it.
  • Open a bank account in the league name, separate from your personal money.
  • Create a Stripe account for registration payouts into that bank account.League Launch
  • Write a season budget: fields, referees, insurance, equipment, awards and software.
  • Register the league domain in your name.League Launch

2. Fields

Field hours decide how many teams you can take.

  • Get a signed field-use agreement or permit that covers every game date, plus makeup dates.
  • Confirm restrooms, parking, lights for evening games, and who opens and closes the site.
  • Ask the field owner whether they need a certificate of insurance naming them as an additional insured.
  • Write down the street address of every field for parents, referees and emergency services.
  • Publish field locations and directions on your league website.League Launch

3. Insurance, waivers and policies

Have these written before registration opens, not after the first question.

  • Get general liability and participant accident coverage for the season. If you join a brand, ask what coverage it includes.
  • Have your waiver language reviewed by an attorney in your state.
  • Write a refund policy in plain language.
  • Write a weather policy: who cancels, by when, and how families hear about it.
  • Decide your photo and video policy for players.
  • Load the waiver and refund policy into online registration so every parent agrees before checkout.League Launch

4. Divisions and rules

Parents ask these first, so answer them on the website.

  • Choose your format and rulebook: 5v5 (NFL FLAG rules), 6v6 (FNL rules) or 7v7 (rec rules). Compare them in flag football rules by format.
  • Set your age cutoff date, whether you group by age or grade, and whether players can play up.
  • Decide on coed, boys and girls divisions, and roster sizes for each.
  • Set registration prices, open and close dates, and division caps.
  • Build the divisions, rules and FAQ pages on your league website.League Launch

5. Coaches, referees and volunteers

Every team needs an adult in charge, and every game needs an official.

  • Recruit a head coach for every team, plus an assistant where you can.
  • Run a background check on every coach and volunteer who works with kids. Check what your state, your insurer and any brand you join require.
  • Ask coaches to complete concussion training, such as CDC HEADS UP, and check your state law on youth sports concussions.
  • Point new coaches to the flag football coaching library for practice plans and first-season basics.
  • Line up referees for every game slot, plus a backup.

6. Equipment and game day safety

Pack this list once and reuse it every Saturday.

  • Flag belts for every player plus spares, footballs sized for each age group, cones, and pinnies or jerseys.
  • A stocked first aid kit, ice and water at every field.
  • An emergency plan: who calls 911, the field address, and where the nearest AED is.
  • A written heat policy for water breaks and when to stop play. For any injury, heat illness or suspected concussion, the player sees a qualified medical professional.
  • A lightning plan. The National Weather Service recommends that organizers stop play when thunder is heard, move everyone to a substantial building, and wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunder before resuming.

7. Launch and first season

The part families see.

  • A league website on your own domain with registration, schedule, rules and contact.League Launch
  • Local search setup and a listing in the Flag50 league directory so parents nearby can find you.League Launch
  • A schedule with game times, fields and makeup dates.
  • Live scoring and standings that families can follow on game day.League Launch

  • A walkthrough with your staff before registration opens.League Launch

What you'll need to provide

  • Divisions, age groups and format (5v5, 6v6, 7v7)
  • Field locations and season dates
  • Registration price and refund policy
  • A Stripe account for payouts (we walk you through it)
